Flexibilisation of biogas plants

In contrast to solar and wind power plants, biogas plants can be flexibly and demand-controlled. The EEG 2012 promotes the flexibility of biogas plants. With the flexibility, a cogeneration unit´s generation power is dimensioned larger than required by the rated electrical power. In times of higher electricity prices, more electricity can thus be produced (positive control power) and at times of lower revenue, the system can be run at partial load or switched off, (negative control power).

These additional marketing revenues depend on the technical option for the flexible operation of the system (control power, rate of performance change, gas storage capacity).
In order to increase the performance of the plant, corresponding tests on storage capacities and plant control (24h timetable) must be verified by an environmental verifier.

Registration to the Federal power grid Network Agency

For a flexible Operation of a cogeneration unit, accompanied by a performance increase, including new approvals; it is first to register with the Federal power grid Network Agency in a so called "market master data Register" (here: registration link). There is to mention the planned start of the flex-opreation with max. three months in advance.



For the evaluation of conformity valid Official documentation is required:

Proof of CHP flexibility

In order to prove the flexibility of the system and to apply for the flex bonus, a demonstration operation of at least 3 days must be carried out and documented. In at least one of the following operating conditions, an environmental verifier must assess the operation on site

1. The proof of the displacement potential
With normal feed, the Biogas plant gas storage is depleted to at least 20% of the gas storage volume.
(When the engines are switched off, the time must be determined until the gas storage volume is filled again)


2. Discovering a timetable-controlled mode of operation
In consultation with the direct marketer, a timetable must be arranged for 24 hours, which takes into account the load cases "engines off", "half load" and "full load", and at the same time represents an effective additional revenue over the period.
In another 24h timetable, the operating conditions provided by the plant operator are to be mapped. Here, a real operating plan of the required load conditions, such as e.g. external heat emission


3. Pre-qualifikation proof
The pre-qualification proof defines the operating conditions along a so-called double hump.
To do this, each CHP must start from 0 to full load within 5 minutes, run for at least 10 minutes at full load and restart within 5 minutes after and after 10 minutes. This procedure should be repeated once more after 10 minutes.



These 3 operating states are not related in time and can therefore be carried out independently of each other. The 15-minute values ​​of the power feed-in must be requested from the direct marketer and attached to the documentation of the demonstration operation to be validated.
